20世纪70年代，文化大革命的狂热大潮已变成涓涓细流，一曾忘我的青年学生们相应伟大领袖的号召，纷纷离开城市前往田野乡村，接受贫下中农的再教育。来自南方的知青柯立（张延饰）和张洁（黄曼饰）是一对好友，她们结伴来到了位于东北的红旗屯插队，并在此结识了脾气火爆却性格善良的董环（李菁菁饰）三人更结为姐妹。 柯立与知青毛玉明相恋，却接连遭到村公安员刘大鹏的纠缠和阻拦。不久，返城消息传来，柯立因怀孕而面临两难的抉择，此时毛反弃女友独自回城。董环为了好姐妹的未来费尽心力，更承担起抚养柯立的儿子小山的重任。在此后的岁月里，三姐妹的人生因小山而紧紧联系在了一起……。Akerman's Toute une nuit is a collection of vignettes depicting the fancies and dramatic moments of a number of people throughout one summer night.
