影片以贾宝玉大雪天里出家倒叙为始，主要故事情节以林黛玉回府奔丧开篇，揭秘了王熙凤贪没林如海家产盖建大观园，后又出卖了宝、黛两小无猜的爱情，设掉包计，致使宝玉迎娶宝钗，黛玉泪尽而亡，最终情散人悲、归于宿命，完成了红楼梦的悲剧结局。。Restoration carried out by the National Museum of Singapore and the World Cinema Foundation.
