清道光年间，杭州城内“信和钱庄”的伙计胡雪岩在中秋节前夕来找“徐疯子”要账，不料，走投无路的“徐疯子”自杀身亡，胡雪岩同情孤寡一生的“徐疯子”，料理他的后事，反被人误传是他逼死了“徐疯子”；漕帮首领七姑娘曾经受恩于“徐疯子”，闻听此讯欲为“徐疯子”报仇，将胡雪岩抓到，要把他扔入湖中，船家女罗四见到，叫人将胡雪岩救下，并向七姑娘说明实情，七姑娘后悔自己的行为，向胡雪岩赔礼并代“徐疯子”还了“信和钱庄”的五百两银子……。Framing StoryDr Martin (Robert Powell) arrives at a secluded asylum "for the incurably insane" to be interviewed for a job by the wheelchair-using, authoritarian Dr Lionel Rutherford (Patrick Magee).
