本书讲述了一个不同于我们的世界。在这个世界里有十二个国家，每个国家都由王与麒麟共同治理。麒麟出生于蓬山，由它选出每一国的国王。如果王的所作所为违背了天道，则麒麟会得失道之症，王若不及时改正错误，麒麟便会病死，麒麟死后一年内王也会死去。蓬山会在第二年结出该国新麒麟的果实，新麒麟会接受天启选出国家的新王。但若王去蓬山退位，那么仅有王本人会死去，麒麟会活下来以尽早选出国家新的王，以尽早结束因王不在位而导致天灾的发生。。Inspired by W.G.
